The raised square on the reverse (quadratum supercusum) was the result of a minting technique popular in the region in this period. The blank was not a round cast flan, but started as a square cut from a sheet. The square was hammered more or less round by exactly four strokes. A square section in the center, the quadratum supercusum, was left with the original thickness.
