Macedonian Kingdom, Alexander the Great, 336 - 323 B.C.
On either 10 or 11 June 323 BC, Alexander died in the palace of Nebuchadnezzar II, in Babylon, at age 32. This coin was struck around the time of Alexanders' death, in the city where he died, Babylon. GS87646. Silver tetradrachm, Price 3608, Müller Alexander 694, SNG Alpha Bank 681, SNG Saroglos 605, Demanhur 4281 - 4288, SNG Cop -, VF, bumps and marks, tiny flan flaw (pit) on reverse, double strike, Mesopotamia, Babylon (Hillah, Iraq) mint, weight 16.816g, maximum diameter 25.8mm, die axis 270o, struck by Stamenes or Archon, c. 324 - 323 B.C.; obverse head of Herakles right, wearing Nemean Lion skin, scalp over head, forepaws tied at neck; reverse Zeus Aëtophoros seated left on throne, nude to the waist, himation around hips and legs, right leg forward (archaic lifetime style), eagle in extended right hand, long scepter vertical behind in left hand, AΛEΞANΔPOY downward on right, lion head with protruding tongue in left field, ΦIΛΗ monogram over M below throne; SOLD
