Byzantine Empire, Heraclius & Heraclius Constantine, 23 January 613 - 11 January 641 A.D.
In 617, the Avars sent envoys to Constantinople for a meeting with Heraclius. He was warned it was an ambush and fled just in time to safety behind the city walls. Angry at their failure to capture the Byzantine emperor, the Avars plundered Thrace and returned to the Danube River carrying off 270,000 people.SH87500.
