When the Greeks under Alexander the Great conquered Egypt, they adapted and transformed the Egyptian child sun god Harpa-Khruti (Horus the Child) into Harpocrates. To the Egyptians, a finger to the lips was simply a gesture indicating childhood, but the Greeks mistook it as a hush for silence.
