Seleukid Kingdom, Antiochus IV Epiphanes, 175 - 164 B.C.
Ba’al-Berit, the local god of Berytus, was assimilated to the Greek Poseidon. In an attempt to assimilate the Jews and consolidate his empire, Antiochus IV outlawed Judaism and erected an altar to Zeus in the Temple. The Jews revolted and the Maccabees again and again defeated large Seleukid armies. Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, commemorates the rededication of the Temple after its desecration by the forces of Antiochos IV. According to the Talmud, there was only enough consecrated olive oil to fuel the eternal flame in the Temple for one day. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days, enough time to prepare and consecrate fresh oil.
