Roman Macedonia, "Thasian" Type, c. 148 - 80 B.C.

After Rome took control of the area, "Thasian" types were struck by Roman authorities, c. 148 - 80 B.C., mainly in Macedonia and perhaps also by mobile military mints on campaigns. Imitatives were also struck by tribal groups (mostly Celtic), c. 120 - 100 B.C. to c. 20 - 10 B.C.

This reverse die and this monogram are both missing from Prokopov Thasos.
GS82771. Silver tetradrachm, Prokopov Thasos, group XIV, monogram -, cf. 1108 - 1109 (V CD5 / R-); cf. SNG Sweden II-2 828 (same obv. die, different monogram); HGC 6 359, VF, well centered on a tight flan, obverse double struck, slightly wavy flan, light marks, Roman provincial or military mint, weight 16.965g, maximum diameter 32.7mm, die axis 0o, c. 148 - 80 B.C.; obverse head of Dionysos right, wearing taenia and wreathed in flowering ivy; reverse HPAKΛEOYΣ ΣΩTHPOΣ ΘAΣIΩN, Herakles standing half left, nude but for Nemean lion's skin on left arm, resting right hand on grounded club before him, left hand on hip, (MHT monogram) inner left; very rare variant; SOLD
