Little is known of the history of Dium and even its location is uncertain. According to Stephanus of Byzantium, it was founded by Alexander the Great, and named after Dium in Macedon. Stephanus notes the city's water was unhealthy. Alexander Jannaeus who conquered and subjugated the town. Pompey restored its freedom in 62 B.C. The coins of Dium are from the Pompeian era. Pliny the Elder and Ptolemy count the city as among the Decapolis. According to Ptolemy, the city was southeast of and quite close to Pella, which is now in Jordan. Josephus in his retelling of Pompey's march, says he came from Damascus via Dium to Pella, thus putting Dium to the north of Pella. Four locations have been identified as the possible site of Dium: Tell al-Husn and Edun, both near Irbid, in north Jordan, Kufr Abil, near Pella, and Tell al-Ash'ari, near the Syrian border town of Der'a.
