The Ara Pacis Augustae (Altar of Augustan Peace was commissioned by the Roman Senate on 4 July 13 B.C. to honor the triumphal return of Augustus from Hispania and Gaul, and consecrated by the Senate on 30 January 9 B.C. to celebrate the peace established in the Empire after Augustus' victories. The first fragmentary sculptures were rediscovered in 1568 beneath the basilica San Lorenzo in Lucina. In 1938, excavation was completed, fragments were recovered from a number of owners, and the altar was restored and installed in its own pavilion. Today, the Ara Pacis is in a museum which opened in 2006.Persian Empire
