Even after they agreed to reign jointly, grandfather and grandson were at war. In 1328 the grandson took the city by surprise and forced his grandfather to abdicate. Although at first he retained his titles and his home in the palace, in 1330 he was forced into a monastery. Old and blind, Andronicus II died on 13 February 1332.
