|Pergamon|, |Pergamon,| |Mysia,| |Mid| |5th| |Century| |B.C.|, After the Persian defeat, Gongylus of Eretria, the agent by whom the Spartan general Pausanias communicated with Xerxes of Persia, fled to Anatolia. Xerxes granted him the territory of Pergamon as a reward for his service. His descendants ruled over the city until at least 400 B.C.
