In 168 B.C., however, the Roman Republic made Lycia an autonomous Roman protectorate governed by the Lycian League. Lycia lost its freedom when Claudius incorporated it into the Empire as a Roman province in 43 A.D. The democratic principles of the Lycian League influenced the framers of the United States Constitution.
