| According to Josephus, during the First Jewish Revolt, Hippos, a pagan city, was the "sworn enemy" of Tiberias, the new Jewish city across the Sea of Galilee. Hippos persecuted its Jewish population and fell under attack by rebels at least once. At the time this coin was minted, Antiocheia as Hippum was a prosperous city in the Roman province of Syria Palaestina. |  |
