His sister was married to Nogai's son Chaka. About 1299 he and brother-in-law Chaka invaded Bulgaria. He convinced the Bulgarian nobility to accept Chaka as Tsar, but then betrayed Chaka, had him murdered, and made himself Tsar in 1300.
