Hungary, Maximilian II, 1564 - 1576
|Hungary|, |Hungary,| |Maximilian| |II,| |1564| |-| |1576|, Maximilian II, the son of Ferdinand I and the nephew of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, was made King of Bohemia and the Romans (Germany) in 1562. The following year he was made King of Hungary and Croatia, and in 1564, he became Holy Roman Emperor. Maximilian was a religious moderate who, though Catholic himself, was close with a number of Protestant princes. He unsuccessfully petitioned Pope Pius IV to make a number of reforms, including allowing clergy to marry.
