Republic of Venice, Doge Lorenzo Celsi, 1361 - 1365
|Venice|, |Republic| |of| |Venice,| |Doge| |Lorenzo| |Celsi,| |1361| |-| |1365|, Lorenzo Celsi (born c. 1310, died July 18, 1365) served as the 58th Doge of Venice, from July 16, 1361 until his death. He was the son of a rich family and was previously noted for leading a flotilla against Genoa. During his reign, Celsi confronted the revolt of St. Tito in Crete, a rebellion that overthrew the Venetian authorities and attempted to create an independent state.

The tornesello was minted in Venice but was specifically designated for use by the administrators of colonies of Coron and Modon, Negroponte and Crete. Struck in an alloy of 1/9 silver, they were intended as a replacement for the Frankish denier tournois, last minted in 1350.
