The countermark on this coin doubled the value to 80 Reis after April 18, 1809 to help finance the government in Brazil. The Portuguese king ruled his huge empire from Brazil for 13 years. He would have remained for the rest of his life if not for turmoil in Portugal due, among other reasons, to his long stay in Brazil after the end of Napoleon's reign.
