Late Roman - Early Byzantine, Antioch, Syria, Terracotta Oil Lamp, 5th - 6th Century A.D.
"High-handle" lamps (this style) have been attributed to 5th and 6th Century Antioch. They have been found in tombs in Syria dated to this period and are much less common elsewhere, even in areas as close as Palestine.
AL34532. Terracotta high-handle oil lamp; cf. Schloessinger 503 (shape) and 504 (similar geometric decoration in trench); 11 cm (4 3/8") long, Choice, buff-red terracotta, high handle with six ribs, steep shoulders, ridge around discus and nozzle forming channel, geometric design of dots within circles between ridges on shoulders and channel, wreath on discus, nine dots within circles on base; SOLD
