Uncertain, before c. 480 B.C., from the Asyut hoard
|Archaic| |Origins|, |Uncertain,| |before| |c.| |480| |B.C.,| |from| |the| |Asyut| |hoard|, Found in Egypt, the Asyut hoard contained numerous archaic coins from almost every location that issued coins prior to c. 480 B.C. Most of the coins were test cut. The cuts provided a means for an ancient banker to verify the internal consistence of the silver.
This particular coin was apparently never struck. It is probably an ingot or planchet of the c. 11 gram standard of Cyprus, c. 500 B.C. The flan is of a shape similar to early Salamis issues. Early Salamis staters were found in the Asyut Hoard.
SH19446. Silver stater, Asyut Hoard 872 (this coin), VF, weight 10.754g, maximum diameter 19.8mm, before c. 480 B.C.; obverse blank; reverse uncertain design in incuse square; deep test cut, ex-Asyut Hoard; SOLD
