Byzantine Empire, Justinian I, 4 April 527 - 14 November 565 A.D.
In 544, Justinian I sent Belisarius back to the Ostrogothic Kingdom (Italy) with an inadequate Byzantine expeditionary force of 4,000 men and 200 ships. Belisarius defeated the Gothic army under king Totila who unsuccessfully besiege the city of Otranto in southern Italy. After their retreat, the Byzantines marched towards Rome.
