Japan, Bunkyu Eiho, Edo Period, 1863 - 1868
The very first four mon coins, issued in 1768, had 21 waves on the reverse. Later four mon coins, all with 11 waves on the reverse, were produced. Bunkyu Eiho (eternally circulating treasure of the Bunkyu Era) were mostly made out of old 1 mon coins and contain no zinc. The cursive script was written by the court councilor Itakura Katsuyoshi.JA110397. Bronze 4 mon, Hartill EJC 5.17, Jacobs-Vermeule K902, SCWC KM C 6a, JNDA 138.2, VF, scrapes (normal for the type), dark patina, trace deposits, Asakusa and Kosuge mint, weight 4.536g, maximum diameter 26.8mm, die axis 0o, 1863 - 1868; obverse bun kyu ei ho, so bun (cursive) script, wide rim on hole; reverse 11 waves; $16.00
