The Lawrence M Woolslayer Collection of
Eastern Roman and Byzantine Coins

FORVM is pleased to offer the exceptional Eastern Roman and Byzantine coins of the Lawrence M Woolslayer collection. Mr. Woolslayer's collection includes extraordinarily beautiful, very rare and museum quality coins. We hope you enjoy examining these fine coins and are able to add a few to your collection. Click on the images to see enlargements. Most of the coins in Mr. Woolslayer's collection have been authenticated by the renowned classical numismatist and author David R. Sear. His works include the most popular Byzantine coin reference, Byzantine Coins and Their Values. A detailed Certificate of Authenticy by the Ancient Coin Certification Service (A.C.C.S.) personally signed by Mr. Sear (for which Mr. Sear charges $40.00) will be provided when the individual coin listing includes, "Certificate of Authenticity issued by David R. Sear." For the A.C.C.S. certified coins below, our source for the attributions, grades, and most of the biographical and numismatic information in our descriptions below is the certificates issued by Mr. Sear.

Byzantine Empire, Justinian I, 1 August 527 - 14 November 565 A.D., minted at Rome by Belisaurius

|Justinian| |I|, |Byzantine| |Empire,| |Justinian| |I,| |1| |August| |527| |-| |14| |November| |565| |A.D.,| |minted| |at| |Rome| |by| |Belisaurius||solidus|
Tradition tells us that the Roman Empire ended in 476 A.D. when Romulus Augustus was deposed and the barbarian Odovacar became king in Italy. This coin, however, was minted in Rome for the emperor of the Romans about 75 years after the "fall of the Roman Empire." Between 536 and 540 Belisaurius recaptured Rome for the Empire. A closer look at history sometime complicates rather than clarifies.

The figure on the reverse is an Angel, not Victory as on the reverse of many Roman and Byzantine coins. The difference - Victory is female but angels are male.

Light weight solidi differ from normal 24 siliquae types by weight, distinctive marks, reverse details and sometime obverse details. They may have been used to pay tribute to foreign powers or to facilitate trade with neighboring cultures who used different weight systems. The letters ΘS at the end of the reverse legend are the source of attribution for this type to the Syrian city Theoupolis (formerly Antioch). However, this attribution has not received universal acceptance.

"CONSTANTINOPOLIS (Istanbul, Turkey - 41°02'N, 28°57'E), founded as Byzantium about 660 BC by Greeks from Megara, is located on the European side of the southern end of the Bosporus. It became a Roman ally in the second century BC, and maintained independent status until at least the first century AD. It was destroyed by Septimius Severus for aiding Pescennius Niger, but rebuilt within the same reign. Constantine I re-founded it as his capital, gave it his name, and opened a mint which struck for over 1,100 years under the Romans and Byzantines. It became the capital of the Byzantine Empire."- from Moneta Historical Research by Tom Schroer
