RIC assigns five different numbers to this type for Hononorius depending on seemingly insignificant details. On the reverse of this coin, the emperor is leaning back and his captive has bent knees, thus it is RIC X 1319. If he was leaning foward ("active") and his captive was flat, it would be RIC X 1326 (for example).SH58614. David Sear notes, "The mint of Ravenna was opened by Honorius in 402 A.D. Coins of this period normally have slender busts." A heavier bust was used from 408 to 423 A.D.SL99915. Obverse legend unlisted in RIC. Exergual mark COMOB with the center of the M filled on the die, resulting in "TT". Lettering style and portrait is cruder than other Ravenna mint issues. Valentinian III, 23 October 425 - 16 March 455 A.D.
"The 'Solidus' was a revision instituted about 310 by Constantine I to the Roman gold coin standard, the 'aureus'. The aureus weight had fluctuated but settled at five to the Roman ounce, which meant that it was not a standard weight since the Romans had no name for a fifth of an ounce. Constantine I struck solidi at six to the ounce, which equaled the Roman weight unit of the 'sextula'. Solidi were struck at about 98% fineness and were 20-21 mm's in diameter. With the defeat of the Licinii by Constantine in 324 the solidus became the standard Roman gold coin and remained so for over 600 years." - from Moneta Historical Research by Tom SchroerSH26056. Libius Severus, 19 November 461 - 25 September 465 A.D.
Libius Severus (also referred to as Severus III) is one of the emperors we know almost nothing about, even though he ruled for nearly four years. He was a native of Lucania and was proclaimed emperor at Ravenna by the mighty general Ricimer. Severus' death is surrounded by mystery. Ancient sources tell us that he was either poisoned or died of natural causes. The event might have the work of Ricimer since his puppet emperor was not recognized by the eastern emperor Leo I.RL90813.
