Throughout his travels, Turner was always keen to ask for what the Greeks called "medals," "any coin of ancient origin," as well as engraved seals. At Turner’s death in 1867 this collection remained within the family, passing to his son, Mansfield Turner (d.1901), and through the latter’s daughter to William Turner’s great grandson, with whom it remained until 1987. It is with great pleasure that we are able to present coins of this fascinating provenance along with brief excerpts from Turner’s Journal. Thus we present the lands of classical civilization as observed through the eyes of a numismatist during the Napoleonic era. |

Mylasa, Caria, c. 170 - 130 B.C.
Mylas is an ancient city on the coast of southwestern Turkey. They traded and did business with the people of Rhodes. "The Pseudo-Rhodian Drachms of Mylasa" by Richard Ashton in Numismatic Chronicle 1992 catalogs and discusses a hoard of very similar drachms attributed to Mylasa. The control marks on this example were missing from that hoard.

Maxentius assumed power in a rebellion against Severus II, who had removed the tax exemptions enjoyed by residents of the city of Rome. The legend CONSERVATORES VRB SVAE declares Maxentius is the Savior of the City, protecting its customs and privileges.WT46671.
