Josephus recounts that after Pilate spent money from the Temple to build an aqueduct, he addressed a crowd of Jews. His soldiers were hidden in the crowd and when Jews began to protest, he gave the signal for his soldiers to randomly attack, beat and kill. Pilate was ordered back to Rome after harshly suppressing a Samaritan uprising. He arrived in Rome just after the death of Tiberius.
