Hendin, David, and Shraga Qedar. Ancient Scale Weights and Pre-Coinage Currency of the Near East. New York: Amphora, 2007. Print.

Tye, Robert. Early World Coins and Early Weight Standards. York: Early World Coins, 2009. Print.

Weber, Klaus. Byzantinische Münzgewichte: Materialkorpus Für 1-Nomisma-Gewichte : Studien Zur Vielfalt Der Ausführungsform, Metrologie Und Herstellung. Solingen: Verein für Metrologie, 2009. Print.

I have a small booklet not yet mentioned.

Mutz, Alfred.  Romische Wagen und Gewichte aus Augst und Kaisaraugst.  Augster Museumshefte 6.  Augst 1983.

Quite good at 64 pages.  Useful even to a non German speaker.  Interestingly only a small bit deals with weights.  Most deals with the  scales themselves.

I tried to buy...

Weber, Klaus. Byzantinische Münzgewichte: Materialkorpus Für 1-Nomisma-Gewichte : Studien Zur Vielfalt Der Ausführungsform, Metrologie Und Herstellung. Beihefte zur Zeitschrift für Metrologie, Issue 10. (Solingen, 2009).

here...

It seemed like I registered, but the website does not let me log in.  I don't know how to order it, probably because I can't understand German. If one of our German members can order it and send it to me, I will send you a PayPal to reimburse you.

Available from two sellers on amazon.de but neither will ship to the U.S.

PS. I ordered 5 copies from the museum in Augst. German again, but I managed to stumble through the checkout - except it never asked for a credit card or told me how to pay.  Hopefully, the will let me know by email.

added three reference articles Pilcher, Tekin and Jovanovic.

I really like the Jovanovic work. A review of 33 bronze weights with a variety of Greek and Latin letters, ranging from 329.43g to 6.4g. mostly a review and description with attribution from 3-6th century AD.

I've been hugely impressed by this publication.

By the way, if any of you are passing through Geneva over these next couple of months, there's an excellent exhibition on Byzantium on at the moment. Apart from a few mouth wateringly beautiful coins, there is an impressive collection of Romano-Byzantine exagia/weights on display, most of which feature in this publication.

Drop me a line if you intend to come over, as I live just next door!

Hi Everyone,

I want to announce the new book by Professor Oguz Tekin "Balance Weights in the Aegean World. Classical and Hellenistic Periods"

Historically, balance weights are as old as the balances themselves. Actually, balance and weight examples of Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Hittite civilisations are known from wall paintings, reliefs, papyri and collections. However, the scope of this book is the balance weights produced and used in the Aegean world during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Balance weights were among the instruments of public sphere (instrumenta publica) of antiquity and they constitute an important group of antiquities worth studying for their unit marks, symbols, depictions, inscriptions and ornaments. However, balance weights have been among the most neglected artefacts within archaeological research. Certainly, this work at handbook level should not be expected to fill the gap entirely, but rather call attention to this field. The examples were chosen from the city-states in the Aegean world and cover only those which bear ethnic or symbol (parasemon).

There is also a book on coin weights, at least those found in the UK: Lions, Ships and Angels: Identifying Coin Weights Found in Britain , by Paul Withers and Bente R. Withers. I mention it here, although it presumably would not include any ancient Greek coin weights, due to its general topicality.

But does it include Roman weights.

I'm aware of the book only because it covers some medieval Hungarian coin weights. The book was written for the use of metal detectorists for the identification of coin weights found in the UK. The description at the following link makes no mention of Roman, so perhaps not: https://www.galata.co.uk/assets/uploaded/docs/13.pdf. Stkp

What exactly does "coin weight" mean here?
