ANTONINUS PIUS with VOTA VIGENNALIA
« on: August 24, 2013, 06:27:43 am »
Hello,

unfortunately, my last addition used to be a little bit mysterious.  Coins of Antoninus Pius with "VOTA VIGENNALIA"-revers is only known as aurei or large brass like  Sestertii, describes as RIC 1012.
My coin is undoubtful genuine, weight and diameter match one to an As.
I can explain it to myself only as a sloppiness in the mint.
Are other examples known?

Av.: ANTONINUS AVG PIVS PP TRP XII,  laureate head right

Rv.: VOTA VIGENNALIA; Pius standing left, sacrificing over tripod, COS IIII in exergue

Material: Copper, weight 10,59 g., diameter 25 mm, die axis 6.00. Strucked 158/159 A.D.

Reference: RIC 1012 var. (As)??

All hits are welcome, thank you very much.

Best regards

Aulus

BMC 1747 cites a dupondius with VOTA VICENNALIA with COS IIII in ex. So why shouldn't  there be ans 'as'?
Nice find!!!!

Hello Frans,

thank you very much for your reply. Now I found the Dupondius on the online collection of the British Museum,  but far and broadly no-one of an As.
http://www.britishmuseum.org/research/collection_online/collection_object_details.aspx?objectId=1198555&partId=1&searchText=As+Antoninus+Pius+Vota&page=1

But it would be dearer to me  having a comparing piece, but it seems to be rare.

Best regards

Aulus

Strack 1173 records a specimen of the As in Bologna, unfortunately without image.

I had a dupondius, should now be in Oxford.

A neat and very rare reverse legend!
