Hi!

Now I got my copy of Hristova/Jekov's monograpy about Nikopolis too. Mrs. Hristova has asked me for a similar thread for Nikopolis Addenda like we have already for Markianopolis. And so here it is!

I have startet to re-attribute my coins and have now completed my Commodus coins. And here are some coins I couldn't find in the new Hristova/Jekov:

#1

A new type, at least a new die combination

Commodus, 177-192
AE 27, 12.68g
struck under hegemon Caecilius Servilianus
obv. AV - T KAI MAR AVRH - KOMODOC AV
        Head, bearded, laureate, r.
rev. NEIKOPO PROC ICT - HG  - EMO KAIKI CERBEILIA:
River-god. bearded, in himation, nude to hips, leaning l., holding rudder(?) in r. hand and resting with l. arm on vase from
       which water flows l.
ref. a) AMNG I/1, 1235, pl. XVII, 31
      b) Varbanov (engl.) 2160
      c) not in RPC online (RPC doesn't react on my emails!)
      d) not in Hristova/Jekov:
          obv. No.8.10.32.3
rev. No.8.10.32.2 var. But no.8.10.32.2 shows a typical water-plant whereas on my coin it looks like a rudder, so that
Pick writes: The object in the r. hand of the river-god appears as thin rod, but it should be probably a rudder; in any
case it is not a reed as Sestini has suggested.
BTW on AMNG 1235 the vase is below the base as on my coin

Best regards

A correction

Commodus, AD 177-192
AE 16, 3.09g
obv. AV[T KAI M AV] - RH KOMODO - [C]
        Head, bearded, laureate, r.
rev. [NEIKOPO] - PROC ICT (starting upper r.)
Female figure, in long garment and mantle, stg. facing, head r., r. hand in puff of garment, holding in lowered l. hand
       unknown object.
 ref. a) not in AMNG
obv. AMNG I/1, 1246 (same die)
       b) Varbanov (engl.) 2158
       c) Hristova/Jekov No.8.10.20.1 corr.
rare, S+, black-green patina

Pick: The figure is of bad work... Wether the bridle-shaped object she holds in her l. hand or wether it stands free beside the
figure is uncertain. But probably Nemesis is meant.
Varbanov calls the figure Isis holding hydria(?)

A completely new type

Commodus, AD 177-192
AE 18, 3.1g, 0°
obv. AVT K [...] - A KOMODOC
       Head, bearded, laureate, r.
rev. [NEI]KOPOL - I - PROC IC
Tyche, in long garment and mantle, wearing kalathos, holding in l. arm cornucopiae and in r. hand rudder.
ref. a) not in AMNG:
Besides an AE 23 (AMNG 1239) AMNG knows two small types, but without kalathos and different
           legends.
      b) not in Varbanov (engl.)
      c) not in Hristova/Jekov:
No.8.10.38.4 = AMNG 1239. But doesn't list a small coin with this type
rare, about VF, a bit excentric

#2 is the same as this one I believe:

http://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/4349/ (with a somewhat different small Nemesis at 8.10.35.1, R3).

The Isis is of better workmanship and not the same type -- second coin in this posting (HR 8.10.30.1, R9):

That one is embarassing, because it has been known here for years. I only know because I had one as well.

Thanks archivum!

Yes, the type at RPC online is the same. It's the type which Pick calls NEMESIS(?). If I write 'A completely new type' it is always limited to Hristova/Jekov's Nikopolis.

@areich:
Can you provide a pic?

A new type with reverse inscription

Elagabal, AD 218-222
AE 17, 3.20g
obv. [?] KM AV. - ANTWNIN
Bust, draped and cuirassed, laureate, r.
rev. NIKOPO - LITWN P (from upper left counterclockwise, inverse)
       Club of Herakles upright
ref. a) AMNG I/1, 1608 (1 ex., Berlin, under Elagabal)
       b) Varbanov (engl.) 2977 (cites AMNG 1608)
       c) not in Hristova/Jekov:
H/J has this type listed under No.8.26.14.7, but not with retrograde legend
           Could be added as No.8.26.14.8

Note:
Pick writes to this coin: Because of the crude style of this coin it is uncertain wether the face of Carcalla or that of Elagabalus is meant; but the former is more probable, because the type occurs under Severus and because on the coins of Elagabalus the addition PROC I(CTRON) otherwise never is lacking.
Now I think Pick's attribution of this coin to Caracalla is not correct. It should be better listed under Elagabal:
(1) The portrait is not so crude that we see that it better resembles Elagabal than Caracalla.
(2) Behind LITWN here is clearly a P, the first letter of PROC. So the last of Pick's argument
goes astray.
(3) Varbanov's attribution is not reliable because he tooks it from Pick.
(4) The same depiction is known by Hristova/Jekov.
Therefore I think it is Elagabal and an unpublished type.

A new type or only a correction

Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 17
obv. AV KAI CE - CEVHRO.
        laureate head r.
rev. NIKOPOLIT - WN PROC IC
Aequitas, in long garment, stg. l., holding cornucopiae in l. arm and scales in r. hand.
ref. a) AMNG I/1, 1393 var. (2 ex., Löbbecke, Wizcay)
It is possible that Pick too has misinterpreted the cornucopiae as cubit-rod.
       b) Varbanov (engl.) 2523(?)
(cites AMNG 1393, but writes in error 'with wheel'.)
       c) Hristova/Jekov No.8.14.35.7 corr. (same rev. die)

On the attached pic it is obviously a cornucopiae in the l. arm. You can see the fruits coming out of the opening. So the deity is rather Aequitas than Nemesis/Aequitas. May be that the cornucopiae is so small and straight that it was misinterpreted as cubit-rod. Or we have indeed two different rev. types.

A new pic made with the coin in hand shows that it's actually a cubit-rod and not a cornucopiae! So this number must be deleted!

A completely new type

Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 25, 10.0g
obv.  [.....] - [CEVHROC]
         Head, laureate, r.
rev.  [...............] / PROC IC
Athena, in long garment, helmeted, stg.l, holding object(?) in extended r. hand,
resting with raised l. hand on spear: r. beside her the shield; l. before her a
        burning altar(?)
ref.: a) not in AMNG
        b) not in Varbanov (engl.)
        c) not in Hristova/Jekov
From the German Forum

Because of the bad state it's very difficult to attribute the coin. But the legend in ex. is clear and we can recognize the depiction. It's Athena resting with raised l. hand on upright spear, and the shield stg. r. beside her. This type is nowhere listed. It's a pity that this coin is so poorly preserved.

May be a member of the FORVM has a better specimen?
