She-Wolves of the Day: let's see yours!
« on: February 14, 2010, 06:04:48 pm »
The very symbol of Rome...The She-Wolf suckling Remus and Romulus
My first She-Wolf was a republican denarius:

Sextus Pompeius 137 BC

The other day I got a City commemorative to go with it.  A span of almost 500 years between the two coins:

How about two sets of the twins--Maxientius/Discouri, horses, she-wolf suckling twins.

Here's a Marcus Aurelius as with a she-wolf reverse:

Obverse: M AVREL ANTONINVS AVG. Laureate head of Marcus Aurelius facing right.
Reverse: TRP XXXIIII IMP X COS III S.C. She-wolf standing right in a cave suckling Romulus and Remus.
Rome 172-173 A.D.
9.53gr, 21mm.

RIC III Marcus Aurelius type 1247 on page 312.

This is by no means a great example, but it was my very first Roman coin (or ancient, for that matter).  Therefore, I hold it in high regard.  Just pretend you are looking at the she-wolf and twins at night in dim lighting!  ;)

I love the idea for this thread! It's fantastic to see all the different coins that this symbol of Rome has appeared on.

The Urbs Roma coins are a type that is near and dear to my heart - I've been collecting them off (avidly) and on (obsessively) for about 12 years now.

This one I found in an uncleaned lot (at about $2 per coin). It's the one that started my obsession with the series, and is still only one of about 5 with a right facing portrait that I've ever seen.

This is one that I just got in an uncleaned lot a few weeks ago (at about $6 per coin) - I am trying desperately hard to be patient with it. It has the potential to be the sharpest, most beautiful ancient coin in my collection (of any type, even against EF and near MS coins that I've bought from dealers over the years). I decided to strip off all the sand (even losing a potentially beautiful desert patina), to get at the shiny black silver underneath. I am still a bit awestruck at how sharp this one is, the scan doesn't quite do it justice.

(any thoughts on what might be on the wolf's shoulder on this one would be welcome too - I haven't seen a mark like this yet...)

Here are three coins from my collection.

(1) Roman Republic, Sextus Pompeius Fostlus, 137 BC, Crawford 235/1c; Sydenham 461a; Pompeia 1a
This coin depicts the story of the discovery of the twins by the herdsman Faustulus. In the twigs the birds of Mars

(2) Maxentius RIC VI, Aquileia 113; C. 42
Shows the temple of Roma with she-wolf and twins in pediment

(3) Cilicia, Ninica-Claudiopolis, Maximinus I., SNG Levante 618 (same dies)
She-wolf and twins with ficus ruminalis behind.

This is one of the nicest ones I have handled of the Urbs Roma folles.

‘Urbs Roma’ AE follis Nicomedia 336-37
VRBS ROMA; Helm. bust of Roma l.
No legend; In ex: SMNA; Wolf and twins, above, two stars
Not in RIC for this officina; 2.53g; 18.5mm; choice aEF, large flan for the type and exceptional reverse

Gert,

Isn't this coin entirely missing from RIC?

I have written in a similar one, but officina B, as 194A in my RIC, AD 330-5.

RIC 205 of AD 336-7 has GLORIA EXERCITVS rev., not Wolf and Twins.

I never realized how many types share the she wolf reverse.  I certainly never thought so many late empire coins would share the reverse especially the provincials!  Great coins everyone.  I need to look for a few more for my collection!
