Q,

I thank you, my friend :)

"'Tis a humble thing but mine own."

One of the things I like about my little museum is that one can actually touch the pieces. My wife's sister was totally geeked that she could hold things like these.

Hello Friends!

I'm back with yet another coin that I thought I would never own but, happily, fate has smiled on me.

Behold the usurper Uranius Antoninus!

SYRIA, Seleucis and Pieria. Emesa. 253-254 A.D.
BI Tetradrachm (26mm, 11.38 g, 6h).
OBV: Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right.
REV: Eagle standing facing, head and tail right, with wings spread, holding wreath in beak; S C in exergue.
Baldus, Nachtrag Ξ/ξ = Prieur 1058 var. or corr.
The reverse legend on the current coin appears to end [...]YΠAT B, whereas Prieur notes the specimen published by Baldus ends [...]YΠATO B. It is not entirely clear from the photograph in Baldus.
Near VF, earthen deposits, peripheral roughness on reverse. Perhaps the second known.

Q/kc(Andreas)/Ancient Dave,

Hello Friends!

Yes, I have to admit that I have not been around too much lately but you guys are always on my mind.

Also, as you can see, coin collecting is ALWAYS on my mind, no matter the circumstances. :)

I do need to get back here more often because you are all like a second family/big brother/sister to me and of course, no one is cooler than the boss, Joe S.!  +++

Thanks for your kind comments regarding the coin. Needless to say but it is one of the prouder moments of my collecting career.

Talk to you all soon!

Regards,
mz

Hello Friends!

I'm back (nearly a year later!) with my latest acquisition (something I expected at this point in my collecting scheme).

This particular coin has changed hands several times in the past few years but I can assure you that it has found a home for the foreseeable future.  :)

Say hello to the usurper Martinian!

Martinian AE Follis
RIC VII 16 Cyzicus, VAGI 3037
20.5 mm, 2.99 gm
IM C S MAR MARTINIANVS P F AVS
Radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right
IOVI CONSERVATORI
Jupiter standing left, holding Victory on globe in right hand & sceptre in left; to left, eagle standing left, head right with wreath in beak; to right, bound captive seated right.
Rev. R. field: X / IIΓ
Exergue: SMKA
Rated R4 in RIC

As far as I can tell, there are only three specimens with this attribution known, all three being on acsearch. This coin is one of those and is duplicated on WW. CA has none (but I'm not a premium member over there). If you know of any others, I'd appreciate the knowledge.

Q.

Thank you!

Quick story about this coin:

I had been looking/watching/waiting for a coin from this particular emperor/usurper for over a year. This one came up in the latest printed auction. I placed a bid online. After watching the live bidding, I thought I had been outbid but I misunderstood the auctioneer. I received an email maybe 5 days later congratulating me. I gotta admit, I was pretty excited :)

See you soon!

mz

Hello All!

Hard to believe, but I'm back with another new treasure for my Roman Emperors, et al, collection.

Julian of Pannonia, Usurper (284-285).
BI Antoninianus, Siscia mint.
Obv: IMP C M AVR IVLIANVS PF AVG. Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right.
Rev/ FELICITAS TEMPORVM. Felicitas standing facing, head left, holding caduceus and sceptre; in field, S-B; in exergue, XXI.
RIC 2., C. 1 (Fr. 150). BI. g. 3.14 RRR. Very rare.

Notes from the seller (Artemide LI, Lot 322):
"A superb example. Deep brown patina. Minor areas of weakness, otherwise about EF/Good VF."

Your comments, as always, are appreciated! :)

Regards,
mz

Haha, no, probably not! Hopefully I will get my hands on a coin like yours at some point!  ;D
What emperor do you think you'll get next? Maybe a nice Regalian or Tranquillina or something? Whatever it is, I look forward to seeing it!
