Olbia, River God Questions
« on: January 01, 2010, 09:11:37 pm »
Ave!

Black Sea, Olbia. 330-300 BC.

3 Æ Dichalks, each circa . 24mm, 10.78g. Obv: River god Borysthenes. Rev: OΛBIO, axe-scepter and bowcase.

Ref: SNG BM Vol: IX 455, Anokhin 133 et al and varieties, etc. etc...sigh. ::)

I've had a number of these issues pass through my hands over the years and I've always wondered about the meaning of the letters in the left fields. Are they just simply mint control marks, date symbols, or what?

Even if I did have Anokhin, I sadly cannot read Russian. Can anyone provide me with Anokhin reference numbers?

See the photos below of the three coins in question.

Thanks for all in advance,

Kevin

Hi, its all in Russian but interesting - Letters called Monograms or Different - helps to identify time of minting:

The monogram is called the magistrate, the magistrates were divided from the names of families in Greece who were engaged in the issue of coins as districts of the city
