Another Geta As "Cast in Gaul"?
« on: August 19, 2007, 05:37:13 pm »
Here's a rare (R2) but underweight Geta As, RIC 126, C. 41, 22 mm, 4.3 g, Geta r., GETA CAES PONTIFEX, Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / Septimius, Caracalla and Geta seated right on platform, officer before; citizen standing left at foot of platform, officer before, citizen below.  Is this an ancient counterfeit like the one discussed here?

And does that also make this CNG specimen (22 mm, 5.2 g) also an ancient counterfeit?

Yes, both yours and CNG's are "cast in Gaul".  Note the yellow color of yours: the metal of these casts is usually brass, as I said in the other thread.

I think the obv. legend of yours is GETA CAES PONT COS (not PONTIFEX), same dies as the CNG coin and BMC pl. 50.5.  I know a few originals and many casts from these dies, but no coins with this rev. type and the PONTIFEX obv. legend, which only occurs on one middle-bronze obv. die, with a different bust type (cuirassed, seen from front).

Thank you, Curtis; you are right that the obverse legend on both casts is GETA CAES PONTIF COS, at one end very crowded and thus easily misread as GETA CAES PONTIFEX.  The reverse legend is more indistinct but still legible: FELICITAS with SAECVLI in the exergue.
