Caracalla (Geta??) from Caesareia
« on: June 15, 2006, 06:37:31 pm »
Hello! A new batch of coins in, with some of the usual ???. This one is very worn but, still, interesting. It should be from Caesareia, Cappadocia, and be from Caracalla (or Geta maybe). Reverse shows Mt Argaeus with 2 formations, one at each side wich seems to be independent of it (I think). From the other representation I've seen of this Mt Argaeus, those 2 formations are absent. What could they be ? Extension of the usual representation of the mountain or human constructions. They mention a type on snible.org that "shows two columns or towers, enclosed within a palisade, beside the mountain" (B. M. C., Pl. XIII. 2), but no pics. Could this be it? Any other infos on this one? Thanks!

Pierre

The objects flanking the mountain are the prize baskets for games that we discussed in another thread, each with a palm branch protruding from it.

Rev. legend in field is first the date ET ID = Year 14 = 206 AD.  Then KOINOC, and in exergue PhILADELPhIOC, modifying an understood AGWN, "Communal games in honor of brotherly love", expressing the hope that Caracalla and Geta would get along with each other.  We also expect the adjective "Severan" also applying to the games, plus the mint name, "The metropolis Caesarea".

The youthful laureate bust on obv. can only be CaracallaSydenham 495 is a similar bronze of Caracalla in the same year and with the same rev. type, but the rev. legend is differently disposed relative to the type.
