This looks like a
medieval Byzantine buckle plate.
Square plates with a griffon design, but with a long vertical hole on the right
side, likely to loop the leather through, are Schulze-Dorrlamm's
type G2 and G3 dated from the late 8th to the early 10th centuries.
Yours without the vertical hole must be roughly similar.
