Antiochus IV, Epiphanes - Houghton 133?
« on: March 29, 2021, 09:23:33 am »
I am close enough?

Antiochus IV, Epiphanes
Seleukid Kings   173-172BC
AE15
Radiate head of Antiochos right
BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANTIOXOY ΘEOY EΠIΦANOYΣ NIKEΦOΡOY Zeus standing right, head left, right arm outstretched.
Houghton 133

Weight: 3.56
Diam: 15mm

From Wildwinds:
CSE 133 (this coin!) ex Houghton collection. A rare quasi-municipal coin of Antioch with a fine image of the ruler radiate, as god.The reverse depicts Zeus, a favorite deity of Antiochus IV who tried to establish his cult (sometimes forcibly) throughout the empire.

thanks!

Legend on your coin looks rather like:

ΑΝΤΙΟΧΕΩΝ ΤΩΝ ΠΡ-ΟΣ ΔΑΦΝΗΙ

The coin here is a smaller denomination as in SC 1426: http://numismatics.org/sco/id/sc.1.1426

Alas, the inscription is somewhat eroded and unclear so not sure if it might be the half-size of SC 1499 (ANTIOXEON TON EPI KALLIROHE) instead of one of the 'TON PROS DAPHNEN' type(s) SC1416 and SC1417. Types from those two 'quasi-municipal' groups look otherwise quite a bit alike and what's in Zeus's outstretched hand (and anything else in the left field area) is off the coin, which might give the specific attribution.

You are right, the two letters above Zeus' arm are more likely ΠP than EM, so it is SC 1417: http://numismatics.org/sco/id/sc.1.1417
(not SC 1416, this is a double unit and too heavy).

Not sure I follow that...

Both of the possible inscriptions would have a 'PI' letter near the top edge to the left of Zeus.

Given how much of the design and inscription is either not clear or not there, it's probably safe to say it's one of several quasi-municipal issues of Antioichos IV; cf. SC 1416, 1417, 1499, etc.

Pretty sure it isn't the type original guessed at the start of this thread :)
