Laelianus mint
« on: March 25, 2021, 01:10:42 pm »
Hello,

Laelianus coins are attributed to many differents mints: Mainz, Cologne, Trier... In your opinion what is the most probable mint?

Laelian and Marius are tricky here. I suspect Laelian gets hold of 'Mint II' (generally cuirassed issues) which is ascribed these days to Cologne. That would fit him being on the Rhine (with a power base at Mainz) whilst 'Mint I' is back in the interior at Trier. I think we have to ascribe Laelian's issues to Cologne, with Marius minting at Trier - and then taking charge of Laelian's mint before Victorinus dealt with him.

The mint of Cologne was taken over by Laelianus in early 269. No coinage in Postumus’s name seems to have been issued by that mint after Laelianus’s revolt, suggesting that the mint of Cologne was not recovered by Postumus and it issued coins in the Laelianus’s name until his death, and the subsequent death of Postumus, in c. spring 269 according to Mairat's chronology.
Drinkwater was supposing that Laelianus moved Cologne’s mint to Mainz. As shown by the Brauweiler hoard, the mint was still located at Cologne under the reigns of Marius and Victorinus.

I finally choosed to follow Gilljam and attribute the mint to mainz. In doubt i wrote ''undetermined mint, Mainz or Trier''.
