Trebonianus Gallus COTD
« on: January 26, 2021, 06:05:07 am »

I haven't posted a COTD for awhile. I picked this up recently, a ragged flan but nicely centered, with an attractive deep grey-green patina and a very good portrait of the troubled emperor.

TREBONIANUS GALLUS, (A.D. 251-253), AE As, Rome Mint, issued A.D.251-2, (9.50 g), obverse. laureate bust draped to right of Trebonianus Gallus, around IMP CAE C VIB [TRE]B GALLVS AVG, reverse. Libertas standing left holding pileus and sceptre, around LIBER[T]AS AVGG, S C across, (S.9690, RIC 114c, C.65)

A nice looking coin.  An As of Trebonianus Gallus must be rare

Portrait is very impressive, especially for Gallus.  +++

Thanks Eric, always a pleasure to show a new addition to a fellow collector.

I honestly did not realize the coin was a rare type when I bought it. I just really liked the portrait, and thought the patina to be particularly attractive. My favorite feature on an ancient coin is the portrait, be it of a real person, a God, Goddess or personification. Ragged flans, flan cracks, die cracks, off center strikes, softly struck legends and even holes don't bother me much if the portrait is unaffected. In fact some of the best portraits I have are on coins with such flaws, so that as a consequence they were offered at a lower price, which luckily I could afford.

Best regards,

Steve
