Sphinx / Horsehead drachm -- any leads?
« on: January 21, 2021, 11:21:44 am »
Does anyone have any further ideas about this Uncertain Asia Minor drachm? Here's the Obolos description with photos (this coin, with analogous smaller denominations for comparison):

Webauction 17 Lot 307 -- ASIA MINOR. Uncertain mint. 5th century BC. Drachm or Tetrobol (Silver, 13.5 mm, 3.14 g, 1 h). Spinx seated to left, raising right foreleg; below, letter(?). Rev. Horse's head right wihin circular incuse. Cf. ANS 1909.999.101. Cf. Traité pl. 28, 11. Cf. Warren 1517. Seemingly unpublished and very intriguing.
Temper thy haste with sloth -- Taverner / Erasmus.

I found several coins, but all say "mint uncertain". The origin is placed in SW Asia Minor or the Levant.

They have an Aramaic tau which I don't see in your photo.

Might the following coin be related?

Thank you; now those are interesting! the first two are definitely analogous triobols -- glad to know of that letter lurking under the sphinx (also more dimly visible on the CNG specimen).
