Interesting Probus from Ticinum
« on: January 19, 2021, 07:42:33 am »
I have here an interesting Probus clearly from Ticinum and I haven't been able to find this particular variety listed in any reference available.

obv: VI-RTVS PROBI AVG

Radiate, heroically nude bust left, with spear and aegis,

Bust similar to RIC 438, but different legend, RIC 438 reads VIRTVS PROBI INVICTI AVG

rev: VIRTVS AVG, mm QXXT

Reverse similar to RIC 438

weight 3.1 g

The coin is somewhat crummy and I haven't managed to capture better pictures.

Any information appreciated !

For Probus coins there is a defined hierarchy in determining which RIC number a coin is a variant of.

1 - Reverse type
2 - Reverse Legend
3 - Obverse legend
4 - Bust type
5 - Mint mark

Identifying the mint first is always a help.

What I mean by this is as follows:-

You have started with the identification of Ticinum, a good start so now you only have to look through Ticinum coins.

You look for the reverse type listed in this section

You should be looking for "Virtus, standing left, holding Victory and spear, resting left hand on shield" but RIC lists this type as Soldier instead of Virtus.

Now you look for VIRTVS AVG as the reverse legend combined with this type

Now we have a range of obverse legends

This obverse legend matches RIC 437 so now we look at the bust type

This type not listed so "RIC 437 var. (bust type)"

The mintmark would be next and in this case all coins are marked QXXT

I had a coin very similar to that showed from Probvs.net

and I described it as folows:- "RIC 437 var. Radiate, cuirassed bust left, with spear and shield, seen from behind (Not listed in RIC with this bust type)"

These heroic bust types do turn up across a variety of types and issues. Here are a couple

Thank you for the information.

The issues of Probus are fun, a lot of varieties and nice types.

Clueless, some information I can add about this coin:
- 6 examples in the collections of Paris and Vienna
- 13 listed in the La Venèra hoard (catalogue Milani 1880)
- 6 more in private and institutional collections.
This coin is struck from the same pair of dies as one in Budapest, National Museum.
