Hello,

On the RIC 4B, page 161, n°6 notes: Schluman, list 90, 199.

Hi!

I think it is a typo and should read Schulmann. That is a name well known under numismatists

Thanks both,

i cant confirm wich of you is right.. i tried to find the catalog of the 31th may and i didnt found. For the books of Schulman i dont know what mean list 90, 199. Considering we have to look at books before 1938 or of 1938 because of the date of printing of the RIC 4B. The Schluman author were only 25 years old in 1938. Therefore i think it is the catalog but it is a strange note from RIC that habitually say the date and then number of lot.

Maybe the list #90 exists on paper only.
So you should contact the dealer by e-mail found on the link I posted.

Some information could be found in the lists of catalogs in the numismatic libraries

Numismatic Auction Catalogues _ Fitzwilliam Museum catalogs
SCHULMAN, J
1927:  no [160], 31 May
list numbered as 90 would be:  1909 no [90], 11 Oct

Brussels library - Bibliothèque royale de Belgique
Schulman Jacques
31 Mai 1927

These two libraries do hold these catalogs

hope that this helps

I seached in those two catalogs, there is no Gordian VIRTVS AVGG.

I found Catalogue n° 78. Avril 1928, Vente. Art. 1930-02, n°82... therefore i can search the n°90 if its noted.

I searched in 10 catalogs since 1930 and dont know if i missed some. There is only the sale f the 31 may 1938, that show a Gordian I coin VIRTVS AVGG but it is a Sestertius without branch. Lot 462.

I was searching the ''Naville III'' quoted for RIC 9 Balbinus...Aureus with CAES legend... and was looking too for the quinarius RIC 8... (i still search). Then i was on the ''Vente. Numismatique. 1928-06-27/1928-06-29. Genève, Naville''... and the lot 1446 is: VIRTVS AVGG. Wrote for Gordian II but the hairs seems visible, the same nose as Gordian I. What do you think about it? Im sorry for the size.. this is already a zoom from catalog.

The alleged Balbinus quinarius was in the Trau Collection, lot 2611, stated to derive from the Wigan Collection, London 1872 = Cohen 28 ("Monsieur Trau") = RIC 8 (citing Cohen 28) = Basel 8, 1937, lot 952 = Glendining 15 Nov. 1949, lot 199 = BMC 39 ("The Trau specimen") = King, Quinarii, p. 365.

It is in fact just an altered quinarius of Valerian I or Gallienus, from the same rev. die as Trau 2982 of Gallienus. Note that the Victory type on this altered quinarius is slightly different from that on the corresponding authentic coins of Balbinus and Pupienus. According to a note by Elmer in the photofile of the Coin Cabinet in Vienna, this quinarius was withdrawn from the Trau Sale as false, but was nevertheless resold two years later in Basel 8, then finally acquired as genuine by the BM from the Glendining sale of 1949.
