« on: January 18, 2021, 10:00:27 am »
Hi,

Long time I hesitate to discuss, this Hadrian tetradrachm, fake or not...??

At first, look good, but both portrait the Hadrian and Sabina, are strange...

 What is your opinion ...

regards

 Joe/Q.

Compare with:

I'm not 100% sure that it is a die match, but it's very close.

Maybe facial features 'improved' and right fields smoothed.

Hi,

Thanks...

For me .. It looks like a die shift both of backside and front side too...
that's the face of the Sabina are narrowest...

maybe the sign the "re cast"  ...?

I don't think it's cast.  Pretty hard to fake the horn silver deposit in Hadrian's drapery.  I do think someone got aggressive with a dental pick in the right field of the reverse where the pitted/porous surface looks to be a bit smeared.

To me, it just looks like a coin that has had a lot of in-ground weathering where much of the alloying copper near the surface of the coin has phase-corroded out of the silver over the centuries.  Likely buried in acidic soil.

Definitely not a die match to the other coin, though it's clearly from the same type issue.

My feeling is it's an honest coin, if a bit rough.

it looks fine for me, the weight with is not given here, it can vary enormously in weight, 99% of legit coins have 12h die axis but this is not a law but a good indication

Thank you,  Ralf, Pekka, Ron and Eric

I’m unsure about something, but it’s just a feeling. I have a lot of tetradrachms from Alexandria, but somehow none of them have such a surface and both sides look a bit concave but only perforated and blistered but hard not soft...

The dimensions and weight, you can find in the name of the photo/file, Eric ...
