Gallery of the Year 2020
« on: December 05, 2020, 11:27:48 pm »
2020 has been memorable, to say the very least!
But collecting goes on and there have been numerable additions throughout the past 12 months, so it's time once again to acknowledge the best galleries of the year.
The criteria as usual is that the nominated gallery should be a valuable resource for other collectors, not just the best coins or the highest quality photos (although those things certainly help). So look for galleries that are well organized with good descriptions and accurate attributions. And definitely try to look outside your own area of interest!

Prior winners are ineligible and can be found here...
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=122077.msg736392#msg736392

All of these galleries are more than worthy and are outstanding examples of what we are looking for in 2020.
So which entry do you think adds most to the collective ancient numismatic database? Now is your chance to choose.
You can nominate up to three candidates and post them right here...

I'll kick things off by nominating anaximander's magnificent gallery...

Great coins well researched and presented, and an absolute joy to browse. My only criticism is that this is not my collection!  ☺

That's who I was going to nominate!

I'll do my second choice Leo's gallery:

I'll 2nd Leo enthusiastically. His focus on Tarentine coinage both impresses me and makes me jealous.

I would like to nominate Carausius' gallery. It can be found here: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/index.php?cat=34967

If I had more time, then I would contribute some supporting verbiage for my nomination, but I am currently short of time and I think that his gallery speaks for itself, so please forgive me.  :)

Very good choice which I was going to add myself.  ☺

I'd like to nominate Schatz's gallery, which I also nominated last year. I'm stepping out of my field of knowledge here (Parthian coins) but his gallery is so well predented that it must be considered here...

The coins themselves are pretty nice too!

I KNOW there are more beautiful galleries out there, so start browsing through them and chances are pretty good you'll find something you didn't know before.

Very kind of you, Peter. And you, Jay GT4.  Thanks!

Just like 2019, 2020 was a busy year for me in the Forvm: I added my Seleukid gallery and Roman coins, newly re-catalogued and photographed, and borrowed the concept of 'virtual trays' along the way.  I'm upgrading my coin attributions, having enlarged my reference library (in no small measure, with help from Forvm's Numiswiki and pdf library).  I've figured out sorting my coin galleries (finally, right?), and look forward to 'going medieval' on the Forvm in 2021.

As you happen across my galleries, please don't hesitate to comment or point out issues.  Misattributions are 'interdit.'

Cheers~

Having already seconded a nomination, I'm not sure whether I can now make a nomination. If so, I nominate St. George Collection.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/index.php?cat=38961
This gallery contains a wonderful collection of English hammered and related issues.

I will second that, an interesting collection I had not browsed before. Very informative and well presented, which is what we're looking for.

And you can nominate up to three galleries for consideration. This helps to bring these collections out into the light so they csn be appreciated better. The St. George gallery is a perfect example of this.

I would like to nominate STKP's Medieval Hungarian albums:

They are definitely outside my area of expertise but are a great resource.

Hi all,

i want to nominate his CAMPGATE collection

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=lastupby&uid=38594

"His" in this case being Blayne W, and I will second that nomination. Nice collection Blayne!

Enthusiasm seems a bit low this year, so if you know of a gallery that deserves recognition post it soon. I will close nominations on New Year's Eve and open voting until January 15 after which the winner will be announced.

He has so many, Parthian, Elymaean coins, and a lot of Bronze Weaponry, and interesting Pottery...

In looking through this thread I don't think that Anaximander's gallery has a second. I second his gallery.

I will second Jochen’s nomination.

I think maridvnvm’s gallery should also be highlighted. Over 3600 entries carefully organised in 53 albums. Very many high quality examples and ‘best of types’:

This is a great thread to be able to quickly look at a lot of fantastic galleries from all walks of interests.  Certainly gives me something to strive for as I develop my collections

Like Tracy, I scanned through and I didn't see a second for Carausius' fantastic gallery so will stand as second.

I wish everyone a fantastic 2021!
