Help please to identify this Greek AE18
« on: October 22, 2020, 03:25:27 pm »
I can't place this coin.

Obv. Male laureate head right, within a circle of pellets, part off the flan.
Rev.  Figure walking right holding spear in right hand, shield? on left shoulder.  Perhaps very faint inscriptions in both fields. Undersized die as circle of pellets 2mm in from edge.

4.1gr 17.5mm 9hr Any suggestions?   Thanks

I want to say Seleucid but I’m not sure.  Perhaps instead a civic coin from Sardes?

Can you make out any of the inscription?

Thanks Molinari,  sorry nothing shows.  The marking are no better in the hand than image.  I'll focus on your suggestions now.

Hi Connect4,

Your coin was minted in Marathos but its difficult with the blurry images to give you an exact era date. If you could take sharper images I could take a second look.

Phoenicia, Marathos

Obverse: Laureate head of Hermes right, caduceus over shoulder, border of dots.

Reverse: Marathos standing left holding aphlaston and leaning on column, in right field mem (M) resh (R) & taw (T) meaning Amrit (Marathos), mintmarks ? and ? in right field, ? left between date and Marathos, Marathenian (=Aradian) era date ? on the left read upwards.

Ref: Duyrat 2002 Pg.30-32, Nos.216-268.

Here is a similar coin in my collection.

Due to Covid 19 issues it will be sometime before I can view this coin again Arados. Meantime I’ve posted another of interest.
