Uncertain Exergue in Ant Pius Sestertius
« on: October 21, 2020, 12:15:45 am »
I have everything else on this sestertius but can't find an exergue that resembles this one. COSIIII is common, but this seems to have something else before IIII.

Your thoughts?

Antoninus Pius sestertius, AE. 152-153 AD. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XVI, laureate head right
SALVS AVG, Salus standing feeding snake arising from altar. Unknown exergue

Here's the context, if that helps...

Cos IIII is usually in the circular legend, but Strack 1085 also records four specimens with COS IIII in exergue. That must be your coin; there is really no other possibility for the legend in exergue with this type.

It's the letter (or letter fragment) before the would-be ...SIIII that bothers me. It looks like a straight line.

Yet as I said, the correct reading must be [CO]S IIII; there is virtually no other possibility. An engraving error seems highly unlikely.

The C and O are definitely present, faintly, in the close up.  The problem is that being so near the edge they are partially obliterated and obscured by an uneven edge feature.
