Hadrian AS Roma 129-30 AD Clementia standing bust?
« on: October 01, 2020, 12:42:04 pm »
Dear cf,

i believe this coin is Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust viewed from side, auctioneer sites it as Laureate and draped only, but those busts mostly do not show it upper shoulder
If you agree it would mean its RIC 1198 and not 1193, according to Richard Abdy 1198=Bu. - must be confirmed

What do you think?

Reference.
RIC II, 714; RIC 1198; Strack 816; C 228

Bust D2/L

Obv. HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS
Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust viewed from side

Rev. CLEMENTIA AVG COS III P P; S C in field
Clementia, draped, standing left, holding patera in extended right hand and vertical sceptre in left.

Cuirassed?  Difficult to say.  I see folds of drapery but only a suggestion of a cuirass underneath the drapery.  Perhaps if you could find a die match to an obverse in XF condition?

IMO the bust is seen from rear, as the fibula is in front
of vertical line from his ear.

Thank you Pekka,

This is why i guess RIC makes it "viewed from back or side" on Busts C2 and D2
