Neocorate in Nicomedia
« on: September 29, 2020, 12:13:15 pm »
Hello All,

We know that Nicomedia was awarded its first Neocorate under Augustus.  Two more were awarded under Severus Alexander, many of his reverse legends at that city have ΔΙϹ ΝЄΩΚΟΡΩΝ or ΤΡΙϹ ΝЄΩΚΟΡΩΝ.  Do we know the specific years these titles were granted?  It would  help to date his series of coins minted there.

Thank you,
Tom Mullally

Hi!

I have looked at the coins of Nicomedia at Wildwinds.
Emperor               Neokorias
Antoninus Pius      1
Marcus Aurelius           1
Commodus      1
Commodus      2
Severus               2
Caracalla              2
Macrinus               2
Elagabal              3
Severus Alexander   3
Severus Alexnder    2
Maximinus       2
Gordian III              2
Philipp I         2
Decius         2
Gallus         2
Valerian I.              2
Gallienus              2
Valerian I.              3
Gallienus              3

2nd Neokoria under Commodus.
3rd Neokoria under Elagabal.
But then 1 Neokoria cancelled under Severus Alexander.
3rd Neokoria again under joined reign of Valerian I and Gallienus

Best regards

Interesting.  That would mean the third actually predates the second.

It seems to have been complicated, you can read it here:

Maybe I'm missing something, but the pages I see don't go past Hadrian.

Oh :-\. What you should see is the chapter 15 "Nikomedia: Koinon of Bithynia" from the book "Neokoroi: Greek Cities and Roman Emperors" by Barbara Burrell.
On the 16 pages of this chapter the up and down of awards and withdrawals of the title to Nikomedia is described.

Perhaps what you can see depends on the country of the IP address you are using or something like this. That's why I wrote "I hope the link works"  :-\.
Perhaps someone has an idea how to overcome this.

Altamura,

Could you summarize it?  I really just need the dates of each neokori for my research, but any other information would be great.
