Demetrios II AR Drachm - seeking input
« on: July 28, 2020, 01:40:16 am »
Max Diameter: 19mm
Weight: 3.82g

Thinking that it could harshly cleaned -- possible remanets of horn silver on bottom left of obverse.
Or is it crystallization?

Looking for comments, please.

The coin has encrustations of silver oxides. It has probably been cleaned using sodium hydroxide which has also removed the copper from the alloy on the surface. this would also explain its low weight

Thank you!
Really appreciate your thoughts on what could have happened to this coin.

I had read that sodium thiosulfate would have been a less harsh way to address the issue of silver oxide.
