20mm Roman Bronze (Female bust?)
« on: July 08, 2020, 09:57:48 pm »
After a long break, I've been bitten by the ancients bug again, so I dug up a large lot of uncleaned coins I bought from FORVM over 15 years, ago, and I've started cleaning/identifying them. This one, though, is beyond my meager talents. Diameter is 20mm, and it weighs in at 5g. The portrait appears to be female, with a bun, but I can't make out much in the way of letters beyond a clear N. The back appears to be some sort of standing figure, and I can make out a V just to the right of the head.

Most of the coins I've identified so far have been Constantinian-era, if that helps the identification. The pictures are taken on a 5x5mm grid, for reference.

With the clear "N", my first guess would be Sabina.  The reverse is Tyche holding a rudder and cornucopia.  I can't make out any of the reverse legend to help identify the city, sorry.

Dear Ben V, Tom, and Board,

Better photos of the reverse lettering would help, but my best hunch at the moment would be Faustina II and Pautalia.  Compare the coin to these examples:

Hope this helps a little.

Mark,

Good sleuthing, that's probably a match.

Wow, well done both of you, thanks! My best guesses were off by a couple of centuries. Here's a better picture of the reverse at a slight angle, hopefully making the lettering more clear.
