Elagabal / Artemis (Provincial)
« on: May 29, 2020, 12:09:36 pm »
Hello!

Here is a coin of Elagabal (or Caracalla ?). I don't find an ID.

Obverse : Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Elagabal right. /  ΑΥΤ Κ Μ ΑΥΡ ΑΝΤΩΝEΙΝΟϹ
Reverse : Artemis standing right, holding bow in left hand, to right at her feet, stag standing right. / PA[...]IO[...]YCI-Y?A?N?[...] Ω in left field, N in right field
Diameter : 24 mm ; Weight : 6.0 g

Many thanks for your help!

Best regards,
Alex

With great caution, I think the reverse legend could be:
[...]ΡA ΔΙΟΝΥϹΙ (Y?) AN[...] Ω in left field, N in right field

I looked for Hypaepa in Lydia because of "ΔΙΟΝΥϹΙ" but it was not conclusive for Elagabal and Caracalla.
Maybe someone has an idea?

Should be a hound at her feet, not a stag.
Found a couple close from Nikopolis ad Istrum

The coins of Nikopolis with Artemis/hound are quite similar but the legend is different.

Thanks for your research!

But I'm quite sure that the legend is not the same.

Varbanov 3817 (a coin from Jochen's collection: 2.95g vs 6.0g, different reverse legend):

Other coins from Nicopolis with Artemis seem to be other denominations (10.0g and different reverse legend):

Do you have another reference?

3817 is an AE 18 with the same obverse legend as yours: AV K M AVP ANTΩNINOC
I was actually looking at 3971 which has the same obverse legend also and is closer in size but the reverse legend is probably different by the looks of it.
I can't read it myself. Eyes no longer cooperate. Someone will point you in the right direction on here.

Ok many thanks!  +++ This coin is very complicated to identify.

On Wildwinds, Varbanov 3971 = AMNG 1914. The bust is only laureate and without E (ΑΝΤΩΝΙΝΟϹ).
The obverse of my coin is: ΑΥΤ Κ Μ ΑΥΡ ΑΝΤΩΝEΙΝΟϹ.

The reverse legend is: YΠ NOBIOY ΡOYΦOY NIKOΠOΛITΩN ΠΡOC ICTRON.
This doesn't seem to correspond to the letters visible on the reverse.
