Vespasian Plate COTD
« on: February 28, 2020, 07:59:50 am »
I am really pleased to have acquired this wonderful rare Vespasian sestertius from 71 which has (I am told) the added bonus of being a Cayón plate coin (Cayón 39). https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-160572

I do not have access to Cayón to double check the attribution. If anyone can be of help I would greatly appreciate it!

Additionally, the coin came slabbed. Needless to say it is free from the plastic tomb!

A great addition, worthy of the COTD, congrats!

Same dies as the BM example.

David,

The important provenance for your fine sestertius is Santamaria, 4 June 1952, Signorelli Collection Part II, lot 1256, pl. XX.

On the basis of this Santamaria photo, Kraay included the coin in his unpublished die catalogue, no. 126b, alongside BMC 757 which is from the same dies, as Alberto observed. Kraay's illustrations of the relevant obv. and rev. dies derive from other specimens than yours, however.

The Santamaria photo was also reproduced by Cayón in two of his compilations:

Los sestercios del Imperio Romano, vol. I, no. 39, p. 254

Compendio de las monedas del Imperio Romano, vol. I, p. 212, no. 91.

Congratulations, David and well-found Curtis!  That's the second Signorelli Collection coin to be posted on Forum in the last month.  The first being my Pompey  ;)  :

Thanks everyone for the kind comments!

And Curtis, thank you so much for the additional provenances and for confirming the Cayón reference! I will add the santamaria provenance to my my gallery attribution.

Here is the plate of David's coin from the P&P Santamaria sale catalogue of the Professor Angelo Signorelli Collection (where the coin hammered at 16,000 Lire):
