Nikopolis COTD
« on: February 04, 2020, 05:10:02 pm »
Nikopolis is always good for a surprise. I am proud to be able to add recently  this Beautiful coin to my collection:

Moesia inferior, Nikopolis ad Istrum, Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 26, 9.90g
struck under govenor Ovinius Tertullus
Obv.: AVT KAI L CEPT[I ] - CEVHROC PER
Bust, draped and cuirassed, seen from behind, laureate, r.
Rev.: VP OVINI.TERTVLLOV NIKOPOLIT PROC ICTR
Eagle with closed wings on palm branch stg. r.,, head with laurel  wreath in beak turned l.
Ref.: a) not in AMNG
        b) not in Varbanov
        c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018):
            rev. not listed
cf. No. 8.14.1.27 (for the type only)
obv. e.g. No. 8.14.9.12 (same die)
        unpublished
rare, VF, dark green patina

I never have seen an eagle on palm branch for Nikopolis! This motive seems to be rare at all. I have found only examples from the time of Philippus Arabs from Antioch.

Best regards
Jochen

Gorgeous coin Jochen!  I've never seen that reverse type for Nikopolis!

I have seen similar reverse types for Commodus at Philippopolis in Thrace. Eagle reverse types were very prolific during his reign at this city.

cf. this coin from my collection

I thought it could be an ear of wheat, but a palm frond is also likely.

Also attached is a closer match from an old CNG auction

Neither are as nice as yours!
